Holding a Baby Alligator at Gator Country

Gator Country was my first stop on a road trip from Texas to Pennsylvania. There, I got to hold a baby alligator for the first time and saw the world’s largest alligator in captivity, measuring 14 feet in length. I love all kinds of animals, but these ancient-looking, toothy beasts have always made my stomach drop. When holding the little one, however, I was most surprised at how smooth his scales were, and the soothing effect they had. It wasn’t much different from holding my pet bearded dragon, except he is not so soft to the touch. That being said, the staff pointed out that even the baby’s bite would be as powerful as a pit-bull’s. While my fear of them has not completely been conquered, I have grown to appreciate these big lizards!
